DISTRICT ATTORNEY VANCE ANNOUNCES SENTENCING OF SERIAL BURGLAR WHO TARGETED WOMEN ON UPPER EAST SIDE

Tyrone Hunter Sentenced to 18 Years-to-Life in Prison

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr., today announced the sentencing of TYRONE HUNTER, 56, to 18 years-to-life in prison for committing three burglaries on the Upper East Side in November 2010. On January 30, 2012, the defendant pled guilty to one count of Burglary in the Second Degree and two counts of Attempted Burglary in the Second Degree.

“The defendant went on a one-man crime spree over two days, which showed no signs of abating before he was apprehended,” said District Attorney Vance. “His lengthy prison sentence will keep a violent criminal off our streets and will prevent him for carrying out future attacks on women.”

According to documents filed in court, on November 24, 2010 at approximately 1:15 p.m., the defendant approached a woman in the hallway of her building on East 69th Street, and forced her into her apartment, where he demanded her property, made her undress, and blindfolded her. The defendant then stole jewelry, a television, and a laptop from the victim. Later on that same day at approximately 9 p.m., HUNTER followed a woman into her building on East 83rd Street, placed his hand over her mouth, and demanded money. However, the defendant did not steal anything from her. The following day, HUNTER followed a third woman into her apartment on East 89th Street. Once inside, he attacked her and threw her to the ground before fleeing without any property.

Assistant District Attorney Shanda Strain prosecuted this case, under the supervision of Assistant District Attorney Kerry O’Connell, Chief of Trial Bureau 80.
