CONVICTED RAPIST MARQUIS PHILLIPS SENTENCED TO 78 YEARS-TO-LIFE IN PRISON

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr., announced the sentencing of MARQUIS PHILLIPS, 36, to 78-years-to-life in state prison for robbing a woman in an elevator, before dragging her into stairwells within her East Harlem apartment building and sexually assaulting her. On August 10, 2012, the defendant was convicted by a jury in New York State Supreme Court of five counts of Predatory Sexual Assault and one count each of Burglary in the First Degree as Sexually Motivated Felony, Robbery in the Second Degree, and Sexual Abuse in the First Degree.

“Today’s sentence reflects the brutal manner in which the defendant violated an innocent young woman in her own building,” said District Attorney Vance. “This defendant received a significant prison sentence for each count of the horrifying crimes he committed, and New Yorkers have been made safer as a result. I would like to thank the victim for her bravery.”

Assistant District Attorneys Rena Paul, Kristen Caruso, and Erin Choi for prosecuting the case, under the supervision of Assistant District Attorneys Nicole Blumberg, Deputy Chief of Trial Bureau 40; Coleen Balbert and Michele Bayer, Deputy Chiefs of the Sex Crimes Bureau; and Martha Bashford, Chief of the Sex Crimes Bureau. Trial Preparation Assistants Heather Clark and Chloe Goodwin and former Trial Preparation Assistant Jamie Whittenberg assisted with the investigation.
