The Heart of the Matter: Why Don't We All Know Dr. Daniel Hale Williams?

It's a question that's been on my mind: why are some truly remarkable figures seemingly left out of our history textbooks, especially when their achievements are so groundbreaking? Today, I want to shine a light on one such individual: Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, a Black surgeon whose incredible contributions deserve to be known by everyone. In a time when racial discrimination was rampant and opportunities for Black individuals were severely limited, Dr. Williams defied the odds and achieved something truly extraordinary. In 1893, he performed one of the world's first successful open-heart surgeries (Columbia Surgery, n.d.; Rock County Wisconsin, n.d.). Think about that for a moment: long before many of the modern medical advancements we take for granted, Dr. Williams bravely and skillfully operated directly on a human heart and saved a life. His patient, James Cornish, had suffered a severe stab wound to the chest. Dr. Williams, without the benefit of today'...

FTC Charges Cancer “Cures” Marketers with Violating Commission Order

At the Federal Trade Commission’s request, the U.S. Department of Justice has asked a federal district court to impose civil penalties upon the herbal products company Daniel Chapter One (DCO) and its principal, James Feijo, for allegedly violating an FTC Order. The civil penalty action also seeks a preliminary injunction to stop DCO and Feijo from continuing to make deceptive claims on the company’s daily radio show and website about the supposed cancer-fighting properties of its supplements, and to require DCO and Feijo to send a notice to purchasers explaining the FTC’s findings that the advertisements were unsubstantiated, as required by the FTC Order. The complaint against DCO and Feijo stems from a lawsuit that began in September 2008 as part of Operation False Cures, a law enforcement sweep aimed at peddlers of phony cancer remedies.

FURTHER COURT-ORDERED RETENTION OF DANIEL RAKOWITZ

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr., today announced that the state Supreme Court upheld an application by the New York State Commissioner of Mental Health to retain Daniel Rakowitz at Kirby Forensic Psychiatric Center on Wards Island, an application supported by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office. Rakowitz was charged with the 1989 murder of his roommate, after which he confessed to cooking pieces of her body and attempting to dispose of her remains. In 1991 a jury found him not responsible by reason of mental disease or defect, otherwise known as the insanity defense. “This decision continues to protect the residents of New York,” said District Attorney Vance. “Two decades after the brutal murder and dismemberment of Monika Beerle, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office remains committed to keeping Daniel Rakowitz in a secure psychiatric facility. This case is an example of the Office’s ongoing work, particularly by our Special Litigation Bureau, to ensure publi...

Interview with Daniel Imperato Part two – Offers 10-point Peoples Program in Lieu of the Proposed Wall St. Bailout

(openPR) - West Palm Beach, FL – Former Independent presidential candidate Daniel Imperato speaks out in our second interview about the so-called Washington bailout. Though marginalized and blacked out by the major media, tracing his words from the last three years of campaigning will show just how accurate this international businessman has been. Long before our elected officials in congress and the administration even recognized the problems, Imperato was offering solutions for Iraq, the Palestinian/Israeli conflict, Yemen, relations with China, South America and, of special concern this week, the derivatives market. Imperato called himself the People’s President 2008, and developed a website using that name. Now he offers a solution to the proposed bailout with specific long-term goals for correcting the economic woes in the global financial sector. Because in his words, “what ails America will eventually effect the rest of the global markets.” His ten point program for the ...
