Lately, logging onto X (formerly Twitter) has felt less like connecting and more like wading through a digital swamp. What was once a place for quick updates and interesting discussions has, for me, devolved into an overwhelmingly toxic experience.
It's a constant barrage of hatred, misinformation, and outright lies. It feels like these elements have become the dominant voices, drowning out anything constructive or positive. And it's not just a coincidence. It's become clear that a lot of this negativity is intentional. It seems many posters are saying inflammatory things just to get people to engage, because they know engagement leads to monetization. The platform rewards bad behavior, turning outrage into a business model.
That's not to say there aren't any redeeming qualities. I do find myself genuinely enjoying comments and perspectives from certain posters, like the sharp insights of Jasmine Crockett or the often provocative takes from Candace Owens. These voices, despite their vastly different viewpoints, offer something engaging that can cut through the noise.
However, the enjoyment from a few individual accounts isn't enough to counteract the overwhelming tide of negativity. The constant exposure to such an unhealthy environment takes a toll. It's draining, it's disheartening, and it's certainly not contributing positively to my life, even with a few exceptions.
So, I'm making a change. I'm choosing to step away from the pervasive toxicity and the platform that profits from it. It's time to reclaim my mental space and invest my time in platforms and interactions that uplift, inform, and inspire, rather than those that simply spread animosity and falsehoods.
For anyone else feeling the same way, remember that your peace of mind is worth protecting. Sometimes, the best thing you can do is simply log off and not look back.
