KobeWieland Copper to Pay $84,750 to Settle EEOC Disability Discrimination Lawsuit

GREENSBORO, N.C. – KobeWieland Copper Products, LLC has agreed to pay $84,750 and provide other relief to settle a disability discrimination lawsuit brought by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the agency announced today. KobeWieland manufactures and sells copper tubing, and employs over 500 associates between its two plants in Pine Hall, N.C. and Wheeling, Ill. The EEOC had charged that KobeWieland rescinded an offer of employment to an applicant at its facility in Pine Hall because the hiring official perceived the person as disabled because he was missing fingers on his left hand. According to the EEOC’s suit, Joseph Cardwell lost fingers on his left hand due to a childhood accident. Cardwell was offered a position as a caster by KobeWieland on Sept. 24, 2008. However, when Cardwell reported for his first day of work, a KobeWieland human resource specialist noticed that Cardwell was missing fingers, and immediately rescinded the offer of employment. Sports/ Baseball, NBA Conference Finals, French Open

Well, the world of sports has been very eventful lately. Now that the very first of the Grand Slam tennis tournaments has begun, the NBA's final four are well into their series, as well as the NHL, and baseball is heading into its third month, there is a lot to discuss! I'll start with baseball. So far, the Cleveland Indians continue to be the surprise of the baseball season as they now have the best record in baseball at 30-15 with the Phillies not too far behind them at 29-18. The funny thing is, I believe the Phillies are yet to play their best baseball, especially since their big off season acquisition Cliff Lee is just 2-5 thus far. However, the other big story right now is how tight the race is in the AL East. The Yankees, Rays, and Red Sox all lost last night so the division has not moved. Nevertheless, just like the Phillies, I believe the Yankees have not played their best baseball either. The key to this division is going to be who finishes the stronge...

US Labor Department’s order involving mine operator’s failure to timely notify of roof collapse upheld

ARLINGTON, Va. — The U.S. Department of Labor's Mine Safety and Health Administration today announced that its order charging Pine Ridge Coal Co. LLC of Seth, W.Va., with committing an unwarrantable failure to comply with the law has been upheld by Administrative Law Judge Thomas McCarthy. The order stemmed from the operator's violation of 30 C.F.R. § 50.10, which requires mine operators to notify MSHA of any reportable roof falls without delay – but within no more than 15 minutes – once the operator knows or should know that a reportable accident has occurred. Pine Ridge waited four days to notify MSHA of the roof collapse that took place at the Big Mountain Number 16 mine located in Boone County, W.Va., and notified MSHA only after the fall was discovered by an MSHA inspector and the violation cited. McCarthy found that the operator's delay was unreasonable and resulted from reckless disregard for its obligations under the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977. The...
